There are temples scattered throughout the city – and we highly recommend visiting any that you come across. However, the Ngoc Hoang Pagoda – or Jade Emperor Pagoda in English – is a Saigon must-see temple. The small Taoist temple sits on the far east end of HCMC District 1 and is the most famous Taoist temple in the city – partly due to US President Obama’s visit in 2016. Built in 1909, the colorful Ngoc Hoang Pagoda features a turtle pond, intricate details and dozens of ancient papier-mache statues. 15 Drink Local Saigon Craft Beer Nightlife in Ho Chi Minh City isn’t limited to chic rooftop bars and unruly Bui Vien Street. However, on the north side of D1 is District 3, which is home to a few more top HCMC things to do. Visit The Thich Quang Duc Monument One of the most poignant city monuments, the Thich Quang Duc Monument is a Ho Chi Minh City must-see. Dedicated to Thich Quang Duc – a monk who burned himself to death in 1963 in protest of the ill treatment of Vietnamese Buddhists – the monument occupies the corner where he set himself on fire. Go See The Pink Tan Dinh Church The cotton-candy pink Tan Dinh Church – or Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus – was built by the French in the 1870s and is a Ho Chi Minh City institution. The Romanesque style church features Gothic pillars and bell tower and has been painted pink – inside and out – since the 1950s. Unfortunately, we had trouble finding current opening times, so we missed the interior, but the street view is still quite a sight! Tour the Vietnam War Remnants Museum Hailed as one of the top things to do in Ho Chi Minh City, the War Remnants Museum is an intense place to learn about the Vietnam War – or, as the Vietnamese call it, the American War. Featuring military equipment and photographs, visitors are taken through a timeline of events of the country’s tragic wartime history. A word of caution, the story of war is told from a largely different historical perceptive than many of us are familiar with. Sip Vietnamese Coffee at a Café on Turtle Lake Turtle Lake is neither a lake nor does it have turtles – but we think it is one of the fun places to go in Ho Chi Minh City. At the center of the roundabout is a stark concrete fountain that was built in 1967. Ringing the traffic circle are numerous cafes, where visitors can rest their feet, relax and watch life go by. Cong Ca Phe coffeeshop is our top pick; we highly recommend ordering their signature drink – an iced coconut coffee – and finding a seat by the window where you can drink it with a view. Getting a Vietnam Visa used to be a real hassle – complete with scams. However, the country now allows visitors to obtain an e-Visa, which is incredibly easy. The Vietnam e-Visa costs $25 USD. Rather than using your phone camera to capture the sights, we recommend upgrading to an actual camera one that has a wrist or neck strap is ideal!. Mobile WiFi for Vietnam WiFi is essential when touring Vietnam. We needed WiFi when we were looking for walking directions, ordering a Grab Taxi or searching for restaurants. We use a GlocalMe Mobile WiFi device to stay connected while traveling abroad. The device has a slot for SIM cards, but data packages can also be purchased online which we love…we can be connected from the moment the plane wheels touch down!. Additionally, we can connect up to 10 devices at a time which is great for families or small groups and the GlocalMe Mobile WiFi device doubles as a powerbank, so we can charge our mobiles on the go! Anti-Theft Bag for Vietnam Unfortunately, theft is common in some Vietnam cities. While we have fortunately never been victims of petty crime in the country, we do keep our valuables tucked away in zippered compartments of our cross-body day bags. I carry a Timbuk2 Messenger Bag, which isn’t designed for travel, but is perfect for deterring pickpockets from getting into my bag! Day 2 looking for tired muscle massage and foot treatment, hotel organised for Lotus Foot Massage at 120 LeLoi at between to which included tips we left sorly dissapointed and i really mean SORE. Massage had no idea and the pedicure was something my 4 year old grand daughter could do better. Day 3 with my neck out and my wife's back and hip disabled we went looking for a foot and hand treatment. Found walking Bui Vien heaps of pamphlet throwers decided on Relax Skin Care at 53 Bui Vien for a Foot Scrape at skin etc and my wife had a parrafin treatment and foot scrub and nail colour very good treatment but the hassle about the tips were over the top. Day 5 decided to try Hoang Thy Beauty Salon and unbelievable, massage knew exactly what Thai massage was, fixed my neck and my wifes back and at was not too bad and didn't mind tipping good as we will be back every second day until we leave. Re Great Massage in District 1 11 years ago I'll agree with this, we usually stay in one of the alleys off PNL, and frequent Hoang Thy, this year we will be staying near the market, but we will still be frequenting Hoang Thy, we're always there for a massage or hair wash, or some other treatment just because they are so honest, nice and do great massage. Not only that, when we went back in 2010 with the kids, the manager or whatever she is, recognised us from 2008, and said "you have been here before, yes? This is particularlly true in most of the places in district 1 , try to get away with a a $2 tip and you are in to a major argument and bad feeling which can spoil the whole experience . The other problem is the quality of the massage is variable even in the same place. This can range from fantastic or awful depending on the skill of the girl The third issue is that most massage places are frequented by local men who are more interested in the the how shall i put this the "happy Ending" than a really good massage. Most massage places will ask if you require a happy ending this even happens at the major hotels . Refusing is never an issue but most have factored this into the tip they are expecting. Decent places MEN ONLY ... sounds sleazy but its not . It is billed as a spa for man . I had a deep tissue massage there which was fantstic the price is around $22 excluding tip There is also a place that is further out near the zoo. The place is non sleasy and offers a 4 hand massage with 2 people massaging you ar the same time. The price is 190,000 for the massage . As for the rest DUXTON used to do a good package with a massage,back rub, manicure and pendicure for $22 . But you will be hit with tips from each service but not too agressive. Re Massage in HCMC 14 years ago My boyfriend and i went for a massage at the Que Huong Liberty Hotel in the backpacker area of HCMC and it was a bit of an experience! The hotel and spa look very professional and we paid 120,000 VND £5 each for an hours body massage and full use of the jacuzzi and sauna. When it came to the massage we were taken to separate rooms which still looked very upmarket. At the end of my hour the masseuse demanded a 40,000 VND tip for no particular reason?! At the end of my boyfriend's massage he was propositioned by his masseuse, who wanted a 500,000 VND 'tip' for a hand job?! Needless to say we legged it out of there pretty quick. Re Massage in HCMC 14 years ago "....spoil it for the rest of us, spoils the market, etc" gosh i get a kick out of that when people say that! how? if anything the opposite - the required and up front cost is kept low by the compensation of the cost + the tip = the total cost. oh, wait a minute, oh it spoils it by hurting someones pride cause they feel shamed and cheap. if someone sets the price of a service and considers the tip as to the total final price - then cheapos can pay the set price, then stiff the server and save money! i think the stiffers owe the tippers a big "thank you" for settng up the system to allow them to save money. you just have to be comforable with yourself looking cheap - no big deal. i guess it all comes back to the whole arguement for or against tipping, and i can appreciate both sides of it. i think "up to you" is best. 19. I also tried doing massage many places, but this is the best I have had in my life. The atmosphere so clean and nice. I ordered relaxing package 2 hours body and foot. We have chance to choose the oil which best smell for us and they give us a form to check clearly level massage. The therapist is so enthusiastic and do good job. Especially, they included hot stone so exciting for relaxing. After massage, they give us jasmine tea and ticket number of therapists for rating by put inside the box. We enjoyed the massage totally. Re Massage in HCMC 15 years ago The problem with massage in HCMC is that the girls get paid very little if anything at all and are pretty agressive about asking for tips. This is particularlly true in most of the places in district 1 , try to get away with a a $2 tip and you are in to a major argument and bad feeling which can spoil the whole experience . The other problem is the quality of the massage is variable even in the same place. This can range from fantastic or awful depending on the skill of the girl The third issue is that most massage places are frequented by local men who are more interested in the the how shall i put this the "happy Ending" than a really good massage. Most massage places will ask if you require a happy ending this even happens at the major hotels . Refusing is never an issue but most have factored this into the tip they are expecting. Decent places MEN ONLY ... sounds sleazy but its not . It is billed as a spa for man . I had a deep tissue massage there which was fantstic the price is around $22 excluding tip There is also a place that is further out near the zoo. The place is non sleasy and offers a 4 hand massage with 2 people massaging you ar the same time. The price is 190,000 for the massage . As for the rest DUXTON used to do a good package with a massage,back rub, manicure and pendicure for $22 . But you will be hit with tips from each service but not too agressive. Re Massage in HCMC 14 years ago My boyfriend and i went for a massage at the Que Huong Liberty Hotel in the backpacker area of HCMC and it was a bit of an experience! The hotel and spa look very professional and we paid 120,000 VND £5 each for an hours body massage and full use of the jacuzzi and sauna. When it came to the massage we were taken to separate rooms which still looked very upmarket. At the end of my hour the masseuse demanded a 40,000 VND tip for no particular reason?! At the end of my boyfriend's massage he was propositioned by his masseuse, who wanted a 500,000 VND 'tip' for a hand job?! Needless to say we legged it out of there pretty quick. Re Massage in HCMC 14 years ago Hi Skeggs i had returned from HCMC n also Hanoi for quite some time was to try to start up a business hotel there but the plans did not take its a good thing too it the massages there is quite a still feel China has better massages that suit me whether it be in Shanghai,Guangzhou,Hainan tippings is too prevalent there n so the standards r too much of a contrast depending on at the Grand its quite a nice area to stay the boat ride is a mini one compared to Huangpu u have a great time. HCM maybe new shanghai - some years from now and smaller but it will come. I can feel it, it has the same buzz. Good luck in setting up hotel.
